Edwardian English Hallmarked Solid Silver Full Size Playing Card Case by Henry Matthews 1902

Here on offer is a stunning Edwardian hallmarked solid silver FULL SIZE playing card case by Henry Matthews of Birmingham, England circa 1902.

The case is fashioned in beautiful floral repoussé work with a fully gilded interior.

There is a vacant cartouche on the hinged domed lid.

It comes with two full sets of half size period playing cards by Ferd Piatnik & Sons of Vienna.

Please note that it can accommodate a set of full size playing cards if that is your preference.


Stamped inside the front lip is has a clear set of English silver hallmarks, the Lion Passant for English silver (925), an Anchor for the assay office of Birmingham and the date letter “C” for the year 1902.

There is also a maker’s mark, H M, which stands for Henry Matthews of Birmingham, England.

The case itself is in excellent condition, including hinge and lid closure. There is just the slightest ripple to the back left hand edge, which can just be made out in my photos, but no splits or damage to the finish.

It measures 3.9” (10cm) wide by 3” (7.6cm) high and 1” (2.5cm) deep.

It weighs 225g with the cards and 109g without the cards.
