WW2 German RAD Hewer by Carl Jul Krebs with Runic "Life & Death" Symbols

Here on offer is a stunning original example of a RAD Hewer by Carl Jul Krebs, with some Runic Symbols.

This massive and very heavy Hewer is in untouched condition and has the lovely thick quality nickel silver mounts and fittings that have developed a beautiful dark patina finish to the plating over the last 80+ years.

The Hilt is in truly excellent condition with nearly all the silvering remaining to the crossguard, ferrule, grip edges and top beak. There is only the slightest loss of plating to the edges of the beak.

Interestingly, on the reverse of the ferrule area, is engraved what look like two Runic Symbols. I kind fellow collector has informed me they stand for "Life & Death" which would fit with the passion for the service the soldiers had that that time.

The genuine stunning Stag Antler Grip plates are in beautiful toned condition with no damage. They fit the metal grip frame like a “glove”.
Both the retaining screws and nuts are in place and show slight surface rust that would clean off.

The huge matte finished Blade measures 9.75” (24.5cm) in length and is in good condition with an overall grey finish. There is areas of darker greying/very light surface pitting that looks like it would clean off if required as the blade is bright where the runner marks appear and have rubbed the greying off.

On the obverse is etched the RAD motto, Arbeit adelt”, which translates to “Labor Ennobles”. Most of the blacking has gone from to the letters, but they are still very “crisp”.

On the reverse ricasso, it has a ‘crisp’ etched Oval Carl Jul Kerbs maker’s trademark.
Above the trademark is the RAD triangle with the words “Ges Gesch” below it.

The metal Scabbard shell is straight and retains most of its black paint. There is some light “spider” crazing and it looks to me that the large front and rear flat sections may have been repainted at some point in its life, but a long time ago.

The upper mount is in excellent condition has the beautiful RAD curls on both sides and a circular pattern border at the lower edge. The hanger bar is still securely in place and shows no signs of being repaired, which I have seen on a number of examples.

The lower mount has the image of the RAD badge on both sides and is in great condition, there just a few small dents to the the lower “bulge” on both edges.
The thick scabbard throat is still held securely in place and all four original mount retaining screws are still in place.

The blade fits and “clips” very snuggly into the scabbard.

I fine example of this massive Hewer by the unusual maker Carl Jul Krebs, with some Runic Symbols, in untouched condition.

The Hewer in the scabbard measures a total of 15.8” (40.3cm) long and weighs a heavy 1080g.
