Unusual Scout Association Machete with Original Leather Scabbard by TomTom

Here on offer is an unusual vintage machete that was issued for use by the Scout Association.

I have come across many different types of Scout Knives in my years of collecting, but never a Scout machete!

It has the post 1967 Scout membership badge a “fleur-de-li with stars”, stamped on the front of the wooden handle and also on the front of the leather scabbard.

The machete has a dark wooden handle, with a lovely dark aged patina. The two wooden slabs that make up the handle are held in place on the metal tang by three large flat rivets.

The heavy steel blade has a curved pointed end and three long groves on each side of the flat blade.
The blade has a dark greyed finish with some light surface rust marks and a good sharp finish to the single cutting edge.

The blade has a maker’s logo and the name TOMTOM encased in a circle. I can’t find any reference to this maker but have seen a similar blade on the Internet without the Scout emblems and by a different maker, but it claims to be French in origin?

The dark brown leather scabbard is tightly threaded together along all the edges using a thick leather twine, which has been knotted at the tip and partly left as a tassel.
It also has a belt loop flap on the back enabling it to be fitted to a Scout belt.

The Machete measures a total of 20.7” (52.5cm) long and the blade measures 14.7” (37.2cm) by 2” (5cm) wide at the ricasso.

With the scabbard it weighs 680g.
