Boer War P.O.W. Trench Art Wooden Letter Opener – Pokerwork - MAFEKING 1900

Here on offer is a Boer War hand made, Prisoner of War (P.O.W.) “Trench Art” wooden letter opener.

The letter opener is made from a beautiful light coloured wood, possibly a fruitwood?

The handle has MAFEKING (actually looks like MAFAKING?) on the front that has been created using a heated rod or pin, to burn the letters into the wood, known as Pokerwork.

The top of the blade also has 1900 burnt into it, again using pokerwork.

The slightly tapered blade does have some old nicks to the edges, but overall it is in excellent condition.

I actual acquired this along with a small wooden chest that was from the P.O.W. camp on Bermuda, which was one of may that the British used to intern the Boer Republican fighters, during the Boer Wars.

It measures 8” (20.3cm) long and weighs 26g.

The Siege of Mafeking was a 217-day siege battle for the town of Mafeking (now called Mahikeng) in South Africa during the Second Boer War from October 1899 to May 1900. The siege received considerable attention as Lord Edward Cecil, the son of the British Prime Minister, was in the besieged town. The siege turned the British commander, Colonel Robert Baden-Powell, into a national hero. The relief of Mafeking (the lifting of the siege), while of little military significance, was a morale boost for the struggling British.
